Frequently Asked Questions
How is federal income tax calculated?
Federal income tax uses progressive tax brackets. Your taxable income (gross minus standard deduction and pre-tax deductions) is taxed at increasing rates: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. Only the portion of income in each bracket is taxed at that rate — not your entire income.
What is FICA tax?
FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) tax funds Social Security and Medicare. The total rate is 7.65% — 6.2% for Social Security (on the first $176,100 in 2026) and 1.45% for Medicare (with an additional 0.9% on income above $200,000).
Why is my take-home pay different from this estimate?
This calculator provides an estimate based on standard assumptions. Your actual paycheck may differ due to W-4 withholding elections, employer-specific deductions, local taxes, pre-tax benefits (FSA, commuter), and post-tax deductions (Roth 401(k), union dues).
This calculator is for educational purposes only. Actual withholdings depend on your W-4 elections and other factors. Consult a tax professional for personalized advice.
